The President's Message: July 2009

Changes Are Taking Place

Your Community Papers of Florida (CPF) conference committee is already busy planning another exciting conference for next May. However, their task will be challenging because the CPF classified network continues to struggle.

Revenue this year is down over 40% from the previous year. That is the bad news.

The good news is during the days that revenue was pouring in, this association set aside large sums of money in investment accounts.

CPF will continue to provide the benefits its members are accustomed to. But we will be scaling back on the budgets to assure the survival of this association, which has been in existence for 47 years.

At the last board meeting the directors followed the advice of the Conference Committee to cut back on the number of rooms CPF will pay for at the annual conference. This means you will still be entitled to send your team members to conference and have CPF pick up the costs (except travel). However, your allocation for the number of people CPF will pay for will be lower than in previous years.

The board also agreed with the Conference Committee's recommendation to return to the Renaissance Airport Hotel in Orlando for the 2010 annual conference.

We all enjoyed the hospitality at the Rosen Centre Resort this year, but the overall increased cost compared to the Renaissance was in the neighborhood of $50,000.

The CPF board will meet in October and take a close look at the expenses for the next year. We are in difficult times, but we will make 2010 a another great year for this association.

A special thanks to the conference committee - Dan Autrey, Jack Glarrow and Joyce Sullivan - for volunteering their time. When revenue is down, it takes extra effort to put together a plan and budget that will move us forward.

The board has approved the recommendation of the Nominating Committee to fill two vacant CPF board of directors' positions. Joining the board will be Kelli Hull, General Manager of the Daytona Pennysaver group, and Jose Alou, General Manager of LaPalma in West Palm Beach.

Both have been active in CPF for a number of years, have attended the conferences, and will be a welcome addition to this board.

Thanks to both for volunteering their time to keep this association among the best of the free paper associations in the country.
