The President's Message: April 2009

See You in Orlando!

The expected turnout for the Community Papers of Florida (CPF) annual conference is overwhelming. During these tough economic times it is gratifying to see the members taking advantage of this benefit.

The investment will be well worth it. The sessions are designed to help you in the sales field, give you some great ideas to take home and to provide bottom-line results.

We start early on Friday morning and don't conclude until about 9:30 that evening, after the Awards for Excellence Banquet. That makes for a long day; but on Saturday we are giving you the afternoon off to enjoy the hotel and the area.

The Friday morning session opens with the popular open mic session moderated by Peter Lamb. This session is designed for senior management. Anything goes. Attend and get involved. During these tough economic times, we need your help and you may need ours to Meet the Challenge.

Following the open mic session is a session on the Internet. Marc Mandt will be on hand to bring us up to date on social media and how we can use it to benefit our publications. This will also be an opportunity to ask questions of a member who took his weekly news publication in Auburndale from print to an online publication. Bruce Causey will share his experience and answer questions.

The Leadership Institute (TLI) takes over Friday afternoon with three scheduled sessions.

"Prospecting, the Key to Success" is a session designed for sales reps. Jim Busch will lead this session. A long-time member of TLI, Jim is the writer of the popular Link & Learn tip sheets provided to members by PaperChain. He did a heck of a job at our conference last year, and we certainly appreciate all the time he volunteers to help the free paper industry. Your sales team members do not want to miss this session.

"Building Strong Relationships With Your More Demanding Customers" is the TLI session being presented by Chris Dayton. It takes five times as much effort to find a new customer as it does to keep one, so take advantage of this opportunity to learn the keys to master those difficult business relationships.

"Creative Leadership for Managers, Supervisors and Team Leaders" is the TLI session being presented by Bill Osborne. Motivate your employees! Inspire your co-workers! Boost your bottom line! Get your creative juices flowing as you explore creative leadership techniques.

J.W. Owens, Charlie Delatorre and Carlos Guzman comprise the distribution panel that will help you improve delivery of your publications, cut costs and plan for the future.

We will conclude the Friday lineup with our annual Awards for Excellence banquet. Dress up - this is your time to shine! Afterwards you'll have to pack up and take home all the awards your team members have won.

The TLI sessions continue on Saturday morning. "Improving Your Team's Closing Ratio" will be presented by Diane Ciotta. She started her career in Florida and has become one of the most respected speakers in the publishing industry.

The session provided by the Dean of TLI, Rob Zarrilli, will be "Building Unstoppable Self Confidence." Rob will light you up - make sure your sales team members attend.

Also on the agenda Saturday morning are several breakout sessions. The editorial session by Ed Henninger will inform you on how the design of your newspapers can help you both attract readers and benefit your advertisers. Publishers and editorial personnel should attend this session.

CPF's popular Charlie Delatorre will provide a "Classified Ad Network Training" session for classified personnel. Learn how the CPF classified network can help your publication make money.

Graphics personnel should plan to attend the outstanding session by Doug Mitchell, one of the top presenters in the country, who will update your team members on their graphic skills.

As always, we will conclude the CPF conference with our Kentucky Derby Reception. Here is your chance to pick up some great prizes, make some money, and take part in a tradition that is famous in the free paper industry.

We are elated that you've signed up for this conference. Enjoy the entertainment, learn some new skills, and make some memories.

See you in Orlando!
