2008 Scholarship Recipient Chosen
Christopher (Chris) Antonopoulos was named the 2008 Community Papers of Florida scholarship recipient.

Antonopoulos attends Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange. His mother, Debra, has been employed by the Daytona Pennysaver in sales for the past 20 years.

In making the announcement, Joyce Sullivan, general manager of the Florida Pennysaver, said, "For the past several years it has been my pleasure to head the committee to select an annual winner for the CPF Scholarship award.

"This award goes to a deserving student that will or is attending college. The CPF scholarship recipient receives $1,000 per year, for up to five years, by staying in school and maintaining a 2.5 grade point average.

"The applicant's parent or legal guardian must work for a publication that is a member of CPF. Verification from the publisher is required.

"This year's recipient has numerous academic achievements starting with a 3.7 grade point average at Spruce Creek High School. He has won numerous awards in computer graphics, including being a finalist in the Florida State Art Fair in both 2006 and 2007. In 2008 the students selected him Prom King and Best Personality.

"Chris volunteered to coach hockey for younger kids and excelled in cross country. In his application he wrote, ‘With the current economy, times are hard for many families. Seeing and living in these times first hand has helped me gain the drive to succeed, to better myself for the future with a higher education, which will help me gain knowledge and give me the tools to be able to succeed in the coming years.'"

Chris plans to attend Florida International University.
